High-Resolution Weather Modeling for Forestry in the Southeast

Scott Goodrick, USDA Forest Service

Decreasing computational costs have added high-resolution numerical weather models to the set of tools available to land management agencies across the country. The U.S. Forest Service has formed five regional fire consortia for the advanced modeling of meteorology and smoke (FCAMMS). These groups utilize the MM5 mesoscale model to produce forecast weather data on grids as fine as 4 kilometers. In addition, these groups develop products for smoke management, fire danger rating and fire behavior prediction.

The Southern High-Resolution Modeling Consortia (SHRMC) provides these services for the southeastern United States. Through a partnership with the University of Georgia SHRMC provides operational support and research in areas of fire weather and smoke management. An overview of the operational products provided by SHRMC and current areas of research will be presented.
