Current and Future Needs for Wildland Fire Modeling and Prediction in Florida and the Southeast
Abstract

Jim Karels, Fire Chief, Florida Division of Forestry

Ever increasing populations across the Southeast associated with reduced fuel reduction programs and construction in our wildland landscapes have created environments where the potential for catastrophic wildfire is becoming a more common phenomenon.

In order for federal, state, and local fire agencies to work towards a reduction in wildfire potential there must be cooperative efforts between fire research and fire operations. Current and future needs for wildland fire modeling and prediction in the Southeast must involve a joint effort of the field fire operations and the wildland fire research programs. Communication of needs, functionality of programs, collaboration between agencies and technical transfer of information gathered and learned must be a cooperative effort. How we confront our increasing future wildland fire threat in the Southeast will depend on how well we work together and listen to our needs of today.
